Statement

CHURCH OF NOW took place at Genezarethkirche, Berlin, from 15 to 18 September 2022, during Berlin Art Week. Ole Ukena presented his work and curated a programme, inviting other artists and musicians into the exhibition.

Space Bloom / Weltraumblüte was commissioned for the church. The suspended work moved during the exhibition, while programmed lighting, fades and different daytime and evening modes changed its appearance.

Embroidered works and watercolours shared the church with live painting, music, performance and workshops. The programme invited people to spend time together inside the exhibition, rather than encounter the works only as objects on display.

The project joined four parts of Ukena’s practice: making the work, shaping its setting, choosing collaborators and opening the space to participation. The changing light and activity made the same church a different setting throughout the day.
