With the exhibition “CHURCH OF NOW“ of German Berlin and Bali based artist Ole Ukena the Church of the Genezareth opens its doors to art and contemporary immersive praxis to examine further potentials of the church’s spatial and metaphorical arrangement, already constituted for higher experiences. Ole Ukena’s work is centered around the ‚Flow State‘ — a mental state of immersion, energized focus, full involvement and potential deep enjoyment rooted in being fully present in the “now". Therefore the artist showcases a mixture of textile works, installation, live painting, video and opens up his show to collaborative processes with other visual artists, musicians and the public that will happen during the constantly changing exhibition.
For the opening the collective around the queer choir ‘Heart Chor” will perform in the church singing songs about love, hope and integration and the multi instrumentalist Rico Loop will live produce songs out of the moment using impulses of his immediate surrounding. Ukena’s work which also includes large scale textile and embroidery works is based on the principle of impulse / reaction and created entering flow states that are transcending the controlling mindset of his conceptual art making process from the pat. The collaborative cross media approach with other artists is in the spirit of repurposing the institution of a church into a playground where art, collaboration and praise to the unknown can unfold.
The Church of the Genezareth in the Schillerkiez district of what is now the Berlin suburb of Neukölln was built by Franz Schwechten in neo-Gothic style in 1905.
Today, the STARTBAHN - Genezarethkirche on Herrfurthplatz is not only a place steeped in history due to its location in the approach corridor of 'Tempelhofer Feld’ in a young and international neighborhood – the Schillerkiez. That is why the interior of the church was extensively redesigned by Studio RLON in 2021 to fit the beautiful colorful and hip neighborhood.
A pink carpet and floor cushions instead of hard wooden benches, bright colors instead of restrained gray tones, coziness instead of coolness and always the invitation to actively live out in the space, to creatively unfold and to look at life with a certain wink. This place was redesigned for artistic and spiritual experiences, as well as for social and socio-political projects. The STARTBAHN promotes self-organized living together in the neighborhood and creates cultural and spiritual free spaces inviting the public now to experience what a church can be in the year of 2022 and what happens when art, spirituality and collaborative processes in a community merge.
